Read Aloud Program

Reading together to build peaceful communities.

Read Aloud Program

A Read Aloud story is a key to many gifts. The first gift is that of building a relationship among the participants::the children and the reader. Creating community provides the opportunity to learn new ideas and to think about them, together.

Secondly, the open-ended “Wondering questions” give the freedom for each person to explore their relationship to the story and to help the group members learn more about each other. The Read Aloud session provides a unique opportunity for the gift of relationships to evolve.

Thirdly, a Read Aloud story provides a gift for developing literacy. The teacher can use a story to teach the many skills necessary to acquire language. The story provides a framework or structure to learn a new language. It can be used to expand vocabulary knowledge, to highlight sounds and the way they are written, and to encourage responses to quetions in the new language that demonstrate understanding. Extensions of a Read Aloud story may be in the form of role plays, art and/or music activities. These activities expand participants’ understanding of the concepts in the story.
