Read Aloud Program

Reading together to build peaceful communities.

Read Aloud Program

Through Read Alouds, listeners are introduced to characters and situations where they engage with the universal dilemmas of childhood. The stories use images to illustrate the skills that lead to peaceful homes, schools, and communities. The adult reader can focus the follow-up discussion toward real-life examples that listeners can apply to their own lives.

Read Alouds can occur in many settings: at home, in a school classroom, in a library or even on a picnic blanket. All that is needed is a good book, a reader and one or more listeners.

In a Read Aloud session, participants begin by looking at the book’s cover and making predictions about the story. As the reader reads the story with expression, interest and curiosity, they stop at strategic points. Listeners may wonder what might happen next or question how a character may be feeling. When the story is finished, the reader and listeners together discuss their predictions. They use open ended questions to wonder and explore the meaning or characters of the story and how they may relate to their own experience. Sometimes the Read Aloud is extended with role-play, games, writing or drawing activities that reflect the story’s meaning for the listeners.

These books may be used to explore Quaker Values or in classroom settings using this Example Sequence for Grades 1-4
