At the TLC/Children’s Libraries, Peace Education encompasses Civic Education through building the core social-emotional learning skills: including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.
The programming is delivered by trained librarians Reading Aloud from children’s books downloaded free from the African StoryBook project. The books are chosen to model problem-solving, cooperation, empathy, kindness and sharing. These are the foundational skills for a just society. Bringing these books and their message for how to live and be a contributor to a just society is the civic education component. The books are Read Aloud and discussed in a child centered fashion, emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving. Social-emotional development is fostered by connecting the message of the books to the children’s lives.
